The Magemenes of Thessaloniki, also known as Las Incantadas, are a group of 2nd-century AD sculptures that once adorned a monumental structure near Thessaloniki’s Roman Forum and were considered one of the city's most striking landmarks. Based on accounts by European travelers, the monument comprised five Corinthian columns, with four of them featuring sculptures on both sides. In 1864, the statues were removed by the French paleographer Emmanuel Miller and transferred to the Louvre, leading to the monument’s destruction and the loss of its remaining traces.
The "Magemenes" were chosen to adorn the personal stamp sheet celebrating the 90th anniversary of the Hellenic Philatelic Society of Thessaloniki, marking the occasion of the Balkanfila XX exhibition, in 200 numbered pieces.
The sheet is available from the Hellenic Philatelic Society of Thessaloniki for €30 + Registered mail shipping costs apply if needed.. To place an order, please email [email protected].
